เนื่องด้วยในปี 2549 อันเป็นปีมหามงคลที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช ทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติ ครบ 60 ปี นับจากที่ได้เสด็จขึ้นเถลิงถวัลยราชสมบัติตั้งแต่วันที่ 9 มิถุนายน 2489 เป็นต้นมา ซึ่งถือได้ว่าพระองค์ทรงเป็น พระมหากษัตริย์ไทยพระองค์แรกที่ทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติยาวนานที่สุด

ในวโรกาสอันเป็นมิ่งมหามงคลสมัย สถาบันการศึกษาที่มีการเปิดสอนหลักสูตรด้านเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศทั้งจากภาครัฐและ ภาคเอกชน จำนวน 9 สถาบัน อันได้แก่ มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าธนบุรี สถาบันเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าคุณทหาร ลาดกระบัง มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีมหานคร มหาวิทยาลัยธุรกิจบัณฑิตย์ มหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุม มหาวิทยาลัยรังสิต สถาบันเทคโนโลยี พระจอมเกล้าพระนครเหนือ มหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวง มหาวิทยาลัยวลัยลักษณ์ ได้ร่วมมือกันในการจัดงานประชุมวิชาการฉลอง สิริราชสมบัติ 60 ปี เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้นักศึกษานักวิจัย นักวิชาการ นักวิชาชีพทางด้านเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศ และนักธุรกิจได้นำ เสนอผลงาน และเป็นเวทีที่จะทำให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ และประสบการณ์ต่าง ๆ ทางด้านเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศระหว่างผู้เกี่ยว ข้องจากองค์กรต่าง ๆ ในระดับชาติ
